HYDROSTATIC PIPELINE PROJECT SAGINAW LAKE

Clearflow products provided an environmentally safe and effective treatment for TSS clarification in this hydrostatic pipeline project, ensuring that discharge met regulatory limits for hydrostatic testing water. This solution not only met but exceeded environmental compliance standards, ensuring that water discharged into the environment was of high quality.

LOCATION: Saginaw Trail near Flint, Michigan.

CLIENT NEEDS: In 2018, Contractor Welded Construction required a reliable treatment method for hydrostatic testing water discharged from a 28-mile stretch of 24” high-carbon steel pipeline. The hydrostatic pipeline project posed a challenge in managing the significant volume of water and adhering to stringent regulatory requirements while working within the constraints of pipeline right-of-ways.

CHALLENGE: Pipeline right-of-ways often present limited space for setting up large water treatment systems, complicating the logistics of deploying effective solutions. Additionally, landowners need to be compensated for any work carried out on their property, which can increase project costs. Welded Construction faced the need for a compact, cost-effective method to efficiently dewater the pipeline for the hydrostatic pipeline project without disrupting ongoing operations or exceeding the budget.

SOLUTION: Clearflow’s Gel Flocculant Reactors (GFR1000) were selected for their compact design and high efficiency. These reactors enabled the effective treatment of the hydrostatic testing water by removing TSS, ensuring that the treated water met regulatory standards. The treated water was then routed through a constructed ditch lined with Clearflow’s Treated Jute for additional filtration before being safely discharged into the Flint River. The GFR1000 achieved a notable reduction in TSS by 37 mg/L and processed 3.4 million gallons of water.

This successful outcome not only demonstrated the GFR1000’s capability in meeting stringent regulatory limits but also set the stage for its use in a subsequent hydrostatic pipeline project in 2019. This achievement underscored Clearflow’s technology as a preferred choice for large-scale water treatment and dewatering applications, ensuring high-quality discharge and operational efficiency in future hydrostatic pipeline projects.
